Until her mom, who lives in New Jersey, casually mentioned the nationwide baby formula shortage to Keiko Zoll, news of the crisis was not on her radar. While Zoll was aware of the Abbott formula recall in February, as the mother of a 9-year-old son she hadn’t given it a second thought. “Recalls happen all the time,” she told the Journal, “and I’m a bit removed from the early parenting space.”

Sitting in her car, the nonprofit communications professional tuned into a podcast, “The Baby Formula Crisis,” to learn more. What she heard left her shaken and sobbing in her Swampscott driveway.

In an effort to provide relief to stressed parents amid the baby formula shortage, a local mom built a formula exchange website that has already connected hundreds of donors with families in dire need. 

Keiko Zoll — mother, communications specialist, and activist from Swampscott, built and launched the website FreeFormulaExchange.com in a few hours on Friday, May 13, after she had learned about the baby formula shortage crisis from her mother and a podcast.

“I was so overwhelmed with emotion from deep empathy, and sadness, and rage, hearing all these stories of mothers just trying to feed their babies right now,” said Zoll.

More than a dozen parents and residents held up sheets across part of Swampscott’s Linscott Park on Thursday to shield students leaving the Hadley Elementary School from witnessing a Trump rally in front of the town’s American Civil War Monument.

“We love our kids and we want to do the best we can to keep them safe and protected,” said Keiko Zoll, a Swampscott mom who organized the effort. “Unfortunately, we’ve gotten into a situation in our country where parents need to come out with sheets to protect our children from hateful language.”

For the two three-year terms opening on the Swampscott School Committee, we enthusiastically endorse incumbent Suzanne Wright and Keiko Zoll. Both have shown they understand the five-member committee’s statutory role of creating policy, supervising the superintendent and approving the district’s budget.

Zoll ran unsuccessfully for School Committee in 2019. And she did not let the defeat discourage her from staying involved. No, she joined the Swampscott School Building Communitte’s Communication Subcommittee. She is also active in the Stanley School Parent Teacher Organization.

What has really impressed us about Zoll is her command of district needs and issues as a relatively newcomer to the Swampscott community. She is intelligent and, as we have witnessed, not afraid to freely speak her mind.

From buttons and newsletters to a vibrant website and presence about town, we have been quite impressed with resident Keiko Zoll’s grassroots campaign for Swampscott School Committee.

She is the challenger to three-term incumbents Amy O’Connor and Carin Marshall for one of two, three-year School Committee seats up for grabs in the Tuesday, April 30 town election.

Zoll has lived in Swampscott for less than a year, but her command of Swampscott Public Schools’ needs and issues, both immediate and long-term, on the campaign trail is noteworthy. Those issues include: the district’s need to continue academic excellence to attract and retain young families, as an impending silver tsunami transforms Swampscott demographics; the need to address growing, volatile costs associated with out-of-district placements and high-need learners; and, whether under the School Committee’s purview or not, the need for more action on the district’s crumbling school buildings.

Breastfeeding mothers would earn up to $35,000 a year if they were paid to nurse their children, according to a new calculation. 

Keiko Zoll, 34, a freelance writer from Greater Boston, worked out what a mother’s salary would be if women were paid for their time spent breastfeeding.

The mother calculated what a mother’s salary would be at both the federal minimum wage level of $7.25 and the ‘living wage’ of $15 an hour if she was remunerated for nursing in an article for Romper.
